Since Stop SIDA was and still is in its transitional period from Tanzania to Burundi, most of its founders and initiators were on their way to return to Burundi, thus repatriation and reintegration in their motherland. Stop SIDA was not preserved from the aftermath of that transition. Stop SIDA got less articles and documents, however, it is legally registered in Burundi. The following is a briefing on how activities are going on, working hypotheses and challenges.

Film festival with refugees theme in Scotland

“Love in the Time of Aids” will be shown in the Document film festival in Glasgow, Scotland on the 23rd of June 2007.

Thanks so much for sending us a preview screener of Love in the Time of AIDS. It really is an excellent film which all of us at Document agree would be fantastic to screen here in Glasgow. Noe is such an amazing positive guy and the film is so beautifully photographed as well.

We would like to invite Love in the Time of AIDS to be part of Document’s Refugee Week programme which will take place at the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow on Saturday 23 rd June 2007.

Refugee Week is a UK-wide programme of arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK, and encourages a better understanding between communities. Document’s programme is focusing on contemporary refugee and exile stories from a GLOBAL perspective which affect us all as Citizens of the World and Love in the Time of AIDS fits into this theme perfectly. Slipway Cinema in Dar

Maweni and the NGO KIWOHEDE has started working on a new documentary about a courageous young women in Dar who is living with HIV. We rent an office at Slipway in Dar, and the owner of the premises kindly lets us use the Slipway Cinema.

This Thursday at 3 pm we are showing Noe’s film there for some of the girls in the KIWOHEDE SISTERS football team.

Members and friends of STOP-SIDA and people from the camps are warmly welcome to join us. We will also invite the Burundi delegation in Dar, and a few NGOs and organisations involved with HIV and/or refugees. We are hoping people will want to stay on for informal discussions about the film and the situation afterwards.

I am aware that this is very short notice, but do not worry - we can organise more shows and events at the cinema at any time. Feel free to suggest what you want to do with this opportunity.

If you are planning to come on Thursday it is nice if you tell us in advance so that we know roughly how many we will be there. And again, if you cannot come but would like us to organise more screening, let us know. The theatre has fifty seats and excllent projection and sound system.

Film screening in Dar Es Salaam on July 17th

In order to educate the youth we (Kerstin and Mejah) are showing nearly every 2nd week a documentary to a circle of around 10 young people (aged 16 - 20) in Dar es Salaam. The contents of those documentaries deal mostly with political and social issues. After the film we always have a discussion about the topic of the film.
This weekend on Sunday, July 17th we will show the film “Love in the Time of AIDS”.

Spread the word, tell your friends in Dar about this opportunity to watch the film.

Get to Know Some of the Stop-Sida Achievements

In today’s society, every person knows at least one person living with HIV/AIDS or who has died of HIV/AIDS but it is still difficult especially for the youths to change their bad sexual related behavior.

According to UNAIDS 2000 report, the number of infected people was estimated at 34 million in which about 95 percent living in the developing world and an overwhelming 70 percent in Sub-Saharan Africa alone.

The same report reveals that the African continent has the highest incidence of HIV/AIDS in the world with some 23.3 million people infected. The countries with the highest prevalence rates were located in the east, southern and central parts. The very worst affected countries on the continent were in Southern Africa; Botswana has an infection rate of 35.80% and Zimbabwe 25.06%.

However, most people seem to be not threatened and are still ignorant; others are working intensively in a bid to eradicate that terrifying disease without cure as its spreading is increasing day after day especially in African countries.

A good pattern is one young association called STOP-SIDA Nkebure Uwumva; may be you have not yet heard about this association or if you have heard about it you don’t know its origin.

The association originated in Kanembwa refugee camp in Kibondo district Kigoma region where a patriotic man called Noe Sebisaba decided to declare himself as one of the people living with HIV/AIDS, and he was the first person in the camps to declare publicly that he is HIV victim.

He then found that it was wise and essential to rescue the lives of those who are not yet infected by initiating a small group of people, and then launch an association called STOP-SIDA NKEBURE UWUMVA with its main objectives been making awareness to the people living in the camps about HIV/AIDS.

The awareness was based on informing people that AIDS kills and does not choose whom to kill. His target was to motivate people to make HIV tests and know about their health situations.

Moreover, once a person knows his or her health it is very easy to protect him or herself and the society around him or her. People were aroused to work under the motto of not allowing HIV viruses to depart from infected people to those who are still being healthy.

Today, STOP-SIDA NKEBURUMVA have saved and is still saving the lives of many people due to its intensive activities, and its members have increased in number and are real working with aim of eliminating HIV /AIDS.

The fact that the ideology of talking about sex in public or to children is seen as immoral, and hinders prevention forces; it has led parents not to have open discussion and education on issues concerning sex in their families; that’s why most children find themselves in darkness on things about HIV/AIDS.

Moreover, the problem of isolating people living with HIV/AIDS is another obstacle to the prevention of HIV, as many of them will have shame to say publicly that they are HIV positive and start teaching others or benefiting other assistances like food and medicaments.

The isolation does not only hurt or affect those who are living with HIV/AIDS but also affects the whole society morally, socially and economically because may be if you are not yet transmitted, one of your relatives or your friends is living with HIV/AIDS.

This problem is mostly common in African societies. Countries that have succeeded to reduce the spread of this pandemic disease have also made step forward to remove these isolation and all other social discrimination and stereotypes based on HIV/AIDS.

The solution is not isolating HIV/AIDS sufferers but to take care of them and to listen to their teachings as learning from a person living with HIV/AIDS touches much. The truth and openness about HIV should be well understood.

The fact that the main way of HIV transmission is sexual intercourse and still people seems not to believe it; the society should work up and find the best means of eradicating this threat. Furthermore, organizations and associations dealing with HIV/AIDS prevention can not succeed alone without cooperation of the whole society and the world at large.

COME ONCE, COME ON ALL; AND STOP SIDA!

Women Should Benefit Extra Care against HIV/AIDS

Currently, HIV/AIDS has become the source of the uppermost terror in the world, especially in Africa South of the Sahara. The UNAIDS 2004 Report on the global AIDS epidemic shows that more than 40 million people are living with HIV/AIDS.

In 1999, the UNAIDS study showed that about 1.7 million young people in Africa got infected with HIV every year, whereas 23.3 million of people in Sub-Saharan Africa are in agony, South and Southeast Asia with 6 million people living with HIV/AIDS.

In fact, the HIV/AIDS has no selection as it cuts across the gender boundaries. However, the most vulnerable are particularly women and children who are often under the strains of physical, cultural and social settings.

Most often, the transmission of AIDS to women and children is a consequence of domestic and sexual violence. Women have practically no access to safe sex, while they are always victimized by the lack of insufficient information and services for prevention and treatment.

A special attention must be directed to children as the future generation, and in some way the victims of household misbehaviour. Several studies have revealed that children get AIDS from their mothers.

The consequences of AIDS go beyond the issue of a woman’s health to affect her role as a mother, a wife, to the contribution of the economic support of family. Women, as multi-roles players in our societies should be secured the highest standards of health throughout their life cycle.

Education on reproductive health should be the concern of actual generations in an effort to assure a complete physical, mental and social well-being for women. This should go in tandem with mothers to access to better AIDS treatment and prevention.

Additionally, reproductive health education should not only go with the prevention HIV/DAIS, but also with the treatment of all other Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs).

The extra care to women should be perceived as a unique service that is to be rendered in the aim of building a better opportunity for the young generations.
